Finding Strength in Scripture: A Faith-Based Approach to Mindset Shifts and Healing

Writer: Shel DammannShel Dammann

Life has a way of challenging us when we least expect it—whether through health concerns, emotional battles, or the weight of uncertainty. In moments like these, it’s easy to let fear and doubt take over. But what if, instead of resisting these emotions, we allowed ourselves to experience them fully, trusting in God’s plan for our lives?

Recently, I had a powerful conversation about how scripture can be a guiding light in times of fear and transition. If you find yourself struggling with uncertainty, fear, or emotional overwhelm, I want to share some of the insights we discussed—ones that can help you navigate life’s storms with faith, self-compassion, and trust in God’s healing presence.

Embracing Emotions Without Judgment

When faced with health concerns, like an upcoming MRI, the natural response is often anxiety. We worry about the unknown, allowing our minds to spiral into worst-case scenarios. But scripture reminds us that God sees and understands every emotion we experience:

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” – Psalm 56:8

Rather than suppressing our emotions, we can embrace them as part of our journey. God doesn’t ask us to be fearless—He asks us to bring our fears to Him. Through our discussion, we explored how allowing oneself to feel emotions, without judgment, can lead to greater peace and clarity. Instead of pushing away fear, it can be helpful to sit with it, acknowledging its presence while remembering that God is in control.

Self-Compassion as a Form of Worship

Many of us are harder on ourselves than we would ever be on a friend. We hold ourselves to impossible standards and criticize ourselves for feeling weak or afraid. But what if self-compassion was an expression for worshipping God? What if, in treating ourselves kindly, we honored the truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made?

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” – Psalm 103:13

Our struggles with self-compassion are often deeply tied to our ability to trust God’s grace. Practicing kindness toward ourselves, speaking to ourselves with the same love and encouragement we would offer to a friend, can be a transformative experience. When fear or self-doubt creep in, we can remind ourselves: God’s love is bigger than our fear.

The Weight of Waiting: Finding Peace in Uncertainty

Waiting—whether for test results, life changes, or answered prayers—can feel like an unbearable burden. The unknown presses in, making it difficult to stay present. The emotional weight of waiting for a medical diagnosis, for example, can be overwhelming, but there are ways to find peace in the process.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” – Psalm 37:7

Small, intentional actions can help during these times: taking deep breaths, playing a game of solitaire without guilt, or spending time in prayer. Sometimes, the best way to manage waiting is not to fight it but to surrender it to God. Instead of letting fear of the future consume us, we can rest in the knowledge that He is already there, preparing the way.

Creating Spaces of Comfort and Stability

Physical space often mirrors our emotional state. If our environment feels chaotic, it can be hard to find peace within ourselves. During our conversation, I realized this truth applied to my own life—I was in the process of reorganizing my home office and preparing for my kids’ move. The clutter around me mirrored the internal pressure I was putting on myself.

We reflected on how important it is to create spaces—both physically and emotionally—that support our well-being. Just as we declutter a room to bring peace and clarity, we can declutter our thoughts by focusing on what truly matters: faith, trust, and intentionality.

Faith Over Fear: Walking Forward in Trust

Fear often tells us that we must have control, that we must know what’s coming next. But faith tells a different story. Faith invites us to release our grip on certainty and place our trust in God’s perfect timing.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7

This journey is ongoing, just like all of ours. But through scripture, self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace the unknown, we can learn to walk in faith rather than fear. If you are facing your own battles—whether with health, emotions, or life transitions—remember that God walks with you. You are not alone.

Take a deep breath. Feel what you need to feel. And know that His grace is enough for you, today and always.

Reflection Questions:

1. In what areas of your life are you resisting emotions instead of embracing them?

2. How can you practice self-compassion as a way to honor God’s love for you?

3. What small actions can you take to find peace while waiting for answers?

If this message resonates with you, I invite you to take a moment to pray, reflect, and trust that God’s got you—no matter what lies ahead.
